Yesterday I had the opportunity to teach all my nieces and nephews a little Sunday School lesson. The age range of kids is from 2 yrs old - 15 yrs old. There were 16 total kids. As I studied the Come Follow Me lesson for the last week I felt really impressed to teach on why do we study the scriptures. The thought that keep passing through my mind was, "Do your kids understand the why of the scriptures?" As I kept pondering on that questions I wondered if I understood the why.
I love readying my scriptures! I've done it since seminary. I had early morning seminary and would have to wake up by 5 am to get ready. My mom would already be on the couch with her scriptures, blanket and a cup of Postum. I loved waking up to her reading! It was so inspiring to me to see her there. I knew I wanted to be just like her.
I go through spurts when I read. Some weeks I'm consistent and read every morning along with journalling as I read. Other weeks I'm lucky to get in 3 days of listening to the scriptures in the shower. The biggest thing I've learned over the years though is that my day just isn't the same without reading or listening to the scriptures. Why is that? What is it that makes the difference?
While pondering about all this, I immediately thought of the movie Percy Jackson. The part of "Go to the water". Here is the clip on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLl9jkYywZY Percy just finds out he is a demigod and is at the special camp to learn his powers. They all play capture the flag. During the game he gets the crap kicked out of him. As he is laying on the ground feeling defeated he hears a voice that tells him to go to the water and the water would give him power. He listens and he is healed.
What power does Percy receive from the water?1. Physically healed2. Received Stregnth3. Gained confidence4. Became who he was meant to become
I took that and compared that to the power of the scriptures. There is a reason that we are asked to read our scriptures daily. As primary kids we are taught the song "Scripture Power" by Clive Romney.
"Scripture power keeps me safe from sin.
Scripture power is the power to win.
Scripture power! Ev'ry day I need
The power that I get each time I read."
What power do we receive from the scriptures?
1. Spiritual Healing
2. Spiritual Strength
3. Physical and Spiritual confidence
4. Find out who God wants us to become
It's only through the scriptures that we find Christ! As we find Christ we find the spirit!
As I made this comparison, I realized I wanted to be more dedicated in my scripture study. I wanted the promised power that comes when we read the scriptures! I want to become who I am meant to with confidence! I know I can do this through the scriptures.
